Meet Patrick "Fitz" Fitzgibbons - Breakwater Science and Adventure Essentialist

At Breakwater we want for our students to explore the world confident in themselves, with a sense of purpose and compassion, belief in their own agency, and the resilience to embrace mistakes. We affirm the integrity of childhood by placing high value on play, balancing the education of the heart and the mind equally. Breakwater's ability to succeed in this is made possible by a talented, enthusiastic, and loving faculty who live these same aspirations in their everyday lives. Our teachers and staff are recruited and retained based on their professional skills, their willingness to model our mission in every respect, and their commitment to professional and personal growth.

We’d like to introduce you to Patrick “Fitz” Fitzgibbons. We celebrate Fitz for finding wonder in all things - from the big bang theory to the tiniest cell or molecule.  He shares that wonder with our community with such joy, earnestness and compassion that it feels impossible not to get swept away. One of Fitz’s many talents is leading kids enthusiastically into science and guiding them to discover, on their own accord, the scientist already within them. Fitz is wild and gentle all at once. His adventures are consistently thoughtful and inspiring.  He gives the same reverence to a sunrise hike as cross country skiing through snow laden trails to looking at pond scum through a microscope.  He is a forward thinker, a passionate scientist, and a true lover of all the greatest things in life: community, wonder, nature, education and children. Fitz has been teaching at Breakwater since 2012 after spending a decade leading students and teachers in environmental education at Nature’s Classroom in Cape Cod.  Watch the video below to learn more about Fitz’s love and commitment to Breakwater and how much he values getting students outside, celebrating with and educating students about the earth, and experiencing all our planet has to offer.
