Breakwater and the Breakwater Enrichment Center are pleased to welcome Peter Wallis, our new Summer Program Director. Peter is an interdisciplinary artist and graduate of Maine College of Art. He has worked with students throughout the country teaching visual arts at independent schools and nonprofit arts organizations. His experience and varied skill set will support the continuation of our unique Summer at Breakwater programming!

Music at Breakwater offers students a developmentally sound, carefully sequenced curriculum in music literacy, with a focus on singing and creativity. Music teacher Hans Indigo Spencer combines his training in Kodàly pedagogy, his background as a jazz musician and media composer with his work as a K-8 general classroom teacher to provide students with a wide range of creative musical outlets.

Eamonn Dundon began his Breakwater career in 2002 and graduated in our 8th grade class of 2012. We asked him to tell us a little bit about his life “beyond the breakwater” and to describe what a Breakwater education meant for him.

In this intelligent and thoughtful Q&A, Eamonn fills us in about college, serving as a fellow on President Obama’s 2012 Campaign, as a Senate Page in D.C., as an intern in U.S. Senator Angus King's office, and about his involvement in the Maine Youth Court… plus, he tells us a story!

Our teachers are the foundation of our school.  We have a faculty made up of some of the most creative, principled and hard working people one can ever hope to have guide our children. We are sincerely grateful for the talent, time and energy that each of our teachers bring to our learning environment.

When the Maine Senate is convened, the public is invited to visit and see what happens during a Legislative Session. Through a lottery process, several of our students were invited to serve as Honorary Pages at the State House in Augusta.

This opportunity comes as part of the Breakwater 7th and 8th grade's continuing investigation of American civics. Learn more here…

How do citizens make a change in their community and the world? How does an idea become a law? How do social movements work? These are the big questions many of us are thinking about in 2017. The 7th and 8th graders at Breakwater are doing more than thinking - they are engaged in an integrated, immersive Civics Unit, and one student is speaking up in the greater community for a cause. Middle School teacher Jed Bloom and 8th grader Johana Rivera tell us more...
