Dear Preschool Families
We are excited to have entered the month of February this week, starting a new calendar to count the days from 1 to 28. There are many February birthdays so we put spaces on our calendar to save the date for those special days.
Our hallway space has become an open and evolving space these past few weeks and is always a popular place for the children to explore something new. This week it housed art studio, where children made their own bird wings and listened to bird songs, followed by a bird bingo game, then it was a hummus making station (yummy), next it was cozy cardboard homes where children enjoyed relaxing independently or playing family with their peers.
During music this Tuesday, the students explored glockenspiels and learned a new song about snowmen. It was fun to experiment with the different sounds the instrument makes when we hit it softly versus forcefully. We are excited to revisit these instruments next week.
Wednesday is community day in preschool and this week Jeroen Van Donselaar, Rowan’s father, came to share his experiences as the captain of a cruise ship. He brought nautical flags and told us about strategies he’s used to navigate through the waters. The children were interested in learning about places around the globe and asked many questions. They were most interested in asking about pirates in the seas which led to lots of pirate play around the classrooms.
Much of our time this week was full of sensory exploration with sand, bubbles, and colorful water in the sensory tables as well as some in-depth family play involving building cars with blocks and taking airplanes to far away places. It is truly wonderful to be able to step back from these situations and watch the children navigate through their dramatic play together with ease.
Our week ended with a birthday celebration for Zion who turned 4 and is celebrating his golden birthday this weekend! We also met with our learning buddies where we read books together in classrooms before playing outside on the big playground. The preschool buddies were having fun showing the big kids the dramatic games they play on the field.
