From its founding in 1956, Breakwater has provided students with a safe and engaging environment in which to grow and flourish. Our students come from diverse backgrounds and hail from over twenty communities in Southern Maine.

At Breakwater, our mission is to engage our students in an optimal learning experience that inspires them to live well on the planet, embrace their whole being, and realize their full potential. Breakwater has been teaching responsively with an emergent curriculum for over 60 years - our teachers are experienced at meeting the individual child's needs as they progress during their time at Breakwater. Our close knit learning community offers a low teacher: student ratio that allows the classroom teacher--and all members of the faculty and staff--to get to know every child.  We cultivate a learning environment where children grow and flourish and where they are challenged but not overwhelmed.

Each applicant is important to us, and we work hard to gain an in-depth understanding of each child as an individual. We have designed a comprehensive admissions process that both honors the child and ensures that we are accepting students whose needs we are able to meet. Please complete an enrollment inquiry/information request, to start the conversation with Molly Tucker, our Director of Enrollment. To visit our campus, please review our Admissions Events & Open Houses page. Aside from open houses, campus tours are limited to those who have started the application process.

We look forward to hearing from you!
