Fantasy World Creation

3rd and 4th graders have been hard at work creating their own fantasy worlds and stories! This multi week integrated learning project took students on a creative journey through analyzing their favorite books and stories, creating their own fantasy worlds, writing and editing a fantasy story, and then making their worlds come to life through art! As they started to create their own fantasy world, they first had to figure out what special element their world would have - talking animals, time travel, secret powers etc. Students were challenged to think about their own favorite fantasy novels and what fantasy element exists in those stories. After brainstorming ideas and sharing with their teacher, students pretended that they were dropped into a spot in their fantasy world and had to share what they saw, smelled, tasted, heard, and felt. They were challenged to use ‘juicy words’ that would make their worlds come to life and allow the reader to better picture this new place they created.

Once they established what their worlds looked, smelled, and felt like, students then created a story about their fantasy world. During the writing process, students first mapped out their story by identifying the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. With these elements identified, students were then able to draft their stories which they edited on their own, with family members, and then with their teachers. Fast forward to mid May and students are in the final stages of editing their stories and sharing their fantasy worlds through art and building creations outside. Through art students are able to bring their worlds to life by drawing maps and murals and labelling elements such as magical rainbows, haunted islands, post-apocalyptic cities, danger zones, spider groves, ancient villages, and more. These young writers are full of truly creative and unique ideas - explore these amazing fantasy worlds designed by our 3rd and 4th grade students! We can’t wait to hear the finalized stories.
