From its founding in 1956, Breakwater has provided students with a safe and engaging environment in which to grow and flourish. Our students come from diverse backgrounds and hail from over twenty communities in Southern Maine.

Breakwater is a close-knit learning community with a low teacher: student ratio that allows the classroom teacher--and all members of the faculty and staff--to get to know every child. Our faculty is comprised of committed and creative teachers whose passion for learning and respect for children is evident each and every day.

The best way to understand the Breakwater experience--what we call The Breakwater Way--is to visit us. Come and tour our campus, observe classes, and see firsthand what an integrated, challenging, and authentic curriculum can offer your child.

Each applicant is important to us, and we work hard to gain an in-depth understanding of each child as an individual. To that end, we have designed a comprehensive admissions process that both honors the child and ensures that we are accepting students whose needs we are able to meet.  Please use the Applying to Breakwater link and select the appropriate grade level for more information.
