At Breakwater, tuition covers all aspects of our integrated curriculum: classroom supplies, field trips, adventure days, and overnight experiences (excluding the 8th Grade Costa Rica trip). Breakwater supports families with sourcing outdoor gear and items for adventures.

Snacks and lunch are not able to be provided by Breakwater and are brought to school by families.

Tuition Assistance

We know that financial planning is an important part of choosing a school, and we are committed to making a Breakwater education accessible to as many families as possible.

Tuition-based schooling can create barriers, and we work to address them whenever possible. Financial need takes many forms, and we invite all families to explore tuition assistance if it would support their access to Breakwater.

Applying for Tuition Assistance

Families may begin the process at any point during admissions. Instructions for applying are shared within the admissions process.

How It Works

Breakwater partners with Clarity, a third-party Financial Aid/Tuition Assistance platform for independent schools to assess a family’s demonstrated financial need.

Families share a financial overview through Clarity, and our Tuition Assistance Committee reviews each application with care and context. 

  1. Tuition assistance is need-based

  2. Reviewed after admission decisions are made

  3. Included in the enrollment contract for accepted students

This ensures that admissions decisions remain separate from financial considerations.

Eligibility

Tuition assistance is available for Kindergarten through 8th Grade.

It is not currently available for Early Childhood programs, though we are actively working toward expanding access.


A Note to Families
If you’re hesitant to explore Breakwater because of cost, we encourage you not to let that stand in the way of learning more. We are always happy to talk through your family’s situation and help you understand what may be possible. All conversations are confidential.

  • We understand that an unexpected loss of work, health issues, or a variety of other factors can impact your financial status making it difficult to fulfill your financial obligations to the school. If this unfortunate situation occurs, please contact the Director of Enrollment with any documentation that supports your change in finances. We make every effort to work with families.

  • Breakwater offers a 5% discount to the youngest sibling.

  • Breakwater does not provide financial aid awards to Toddler and Preschool students. We encourage families to explore the Dependent Care Tax Benefits in the State of Maine.
